How to Control Resources

control resourcesControl resources is the new process introduced in PMBOK 6th version.

This is all about controlling and monitoring the consumption or usage of physical resources on the project. By physical resources we mean servers, tools, equipment, infrastructure, machinery, materials, facilities and so on. For taking care of people we have Manage team process.

This is pretty straight forward and performed on a regular basis. We have planned resources based on estimation figures during planning phase. Now while the project work is being carried out we look for any changes against the plan  for,

  • availability of resources required when they are needed, and ensuring there is no shortage
  • allocation of planned resources for the activities at the right time
  • release of resources when they are no longer needed
  • maximum utilization of resources to optimize the cost
  • proactively managing any changes in the planned resource requirements

What do we need?

We need those project documents that impact or influence resources. [continue reading…]

CELEBRATE FREEDOM!

independence-day-freedom offer-2018

“Freedom means the opportunity to be what we never thought we would be.”

—Daniel J. Boorstin

This Offer has Ended.

I couldn’t sleep the night I read this quote for the first time. There is such a profound truth in that one sentence. It left a stronger impact on me than a well-written book probably would have.

That was exactly 7 years ago.

Soon I defined Freedom in my own terms, as it applied to my life and choices. And that helped me take a series of decisions, which lead me on a path to the place of where I am at today.

It’s a place of freedom, and absolute bliss. It is almost a dreamy feeling to be able to help people achieve freedom as it applies to them, in their own lives, in the realm of career and finances.

True to this spirit, this Independence day, I’m offering all my resources – on PMP Exam and on Passive Income Business Strategies – at 50% discount (and one for free!).

I hope these will help you take a decisive step towards your freedom, knowing that I’m with you all the way through the journey.

My preparations

Working, young children to take care and other commitments made the journey long and challenging. I was determined and focused and it paid.

Coming across Shiv was a blessing, his emails, books and advice to invest in prepcast were great.

My journey,

1. Started with PMBOK four months in advance, spending approximately 6-7 hrs a day. I marked the important lined and terms while reading which helped me a lot in keeping track. And this also helped during last 2 weeks in reviewing and remembering the important terms.

I booked the exam slot just before 3 weeks as I was not sure if I am ready for it. [continue reading…]

Many people think that PMP exam preparation has to be complex with detailed planning (I have had people sending me their study plan in MS Project Gantt charts!). And then once in a while you will come across few people that put in simple, and even old-school methods to simply go ahead and pass their PMP exam. And when I request them to share their exam preparation the write-up will be pretty short. Understandably so, as they simply stuck to 1-2 simple strategies and reached their goal!

Here’s one such, shared by Sheila Chau. She’s one of the busiest working mom that I have seen hitting their PMP goal. It’s not easy, but they make the most of limited resources at their disposal – mainly time. Like a true Project Manager. Don’t let the simplicity of this article let you convince that PMP prep is easy. And at the same time, don’t ignore these techniques because they are simple.

-Shiv Shenoy

With that said, here’s Sheila sharing her PMP journey (Thank you, Sheila!)…

manage project knowledge

While we learned how to execute a project in the previous lesson, the PM has to do something else too in parallel –  collect, store, and mange the knowledge on the project. Manage Project Knowledge is the new process introduced by PMI in PMBOK version 6. What does this process do, and how you, as a project manager, can do a good job at this? And how knowledge management is done on Agile project? Let us look at these in this lesson.

Every project is a vast learning experience for everyone involved in it. Even when a project very similar to a previous one is managed, due to multitude of variables such as environmental factors, people factors, stakeholder behavior and so on, we gain new knowledge. Thus while we use existing knowledge to manage a project, a vast amount of new knowledge is gained.

It would be crucial to document this knowledge so that we can improve our processes and gain better productivity, not just in the current project but also in future projects. [continue reading…]

pmp exam prepIf you are a project manager eyeing for that promotion, raise or even that dream project to get into – chances are that you’ve made a resolution to get your PMP this year. You might have even started your PMP exam prep.

You would do well to hit this goal this year because PMI may bring in the newer version of exam early next year (2021). As with every time, the ‘newer’ exam will have its own nuances and it would take several months before the students get used to the new exam.

‘Weirdness’ of PMP exam

Unlike other certifications you might have taken in your career, PMP has a bit of weirdness to it.

For one, even PMI does not disclose exactly how they grade the exam. Although industry experts like Cornelius have figured how this is done, there is no official word. In Cornelius’ own words (from one of his facebook posts) – [continue reading…]
