How did you decide on PMP certification?

mayank-shukla-pmpI felt like being complacent in my current role in Service delivery, performing the same role and responsibilities for the past 2 years. There were other certifications that I considered before finalizing PMP, such as AWS Certification, Azure Certification, Salesforce and Scrum master.

However, I decided to move forward and get certified in Project management. Out of all the certifications out there I found PMP to be most versatile and best suited to move into serious project management role. This is something that would help me in moving ahead in my project management career.

I felt that PMP certification by PMI, which is the well-respected leader in project management education, will provide me the knowledge, framework, and best practices required to execute my projects efficiently.

How do you see the certification helping you now?

As I was studying for the exam I jumped in to implement what I have learned at work.

As of now I have been able to implement few practices like Stakeholder analysis and engagement plan. I have also created communication management plan and risk management plan.

With these I already feel better control in managing the project.

What study resources did you use?

One of the requirements for PMP exam was to acquire a 35 hours of Project management education. I enrolled into classroom training from PluralSight to fulfill this requirement.

I consider myself as a visual learner, and so when I came across HeadFirst PMP book (ad), I immediately grabbed it. This book helped me strengthen the essential fundamentals of PMP syllabus.

Then I took up Rita Mulachy’s PMP Exam prep book (ad). I studied the complete book twice.

In parallel I also used PMBOK guide, just for reference. I firmly believe that irrespective of which study resource you use – whether it is a book, course, or even classroom training – PMBOK has to be used as a reference.

pmp simulator is a lifesaver igechi-worlu“PMP Simulator is a Lifesaver!”, said Igechi Worlu after crushing his PMP exam. As I went over his prep strategies it was clear how cleverly Igechi used simulators to learn, test, and prepare for his PMP exam.

Igechi Worlu is versatile business executive with strong background working in SME based businesses. He is currently the Manager – Business Development and Projects at Primus Nigeria, an oil and gas service firm based in Rivers State, Nigeria and Manchester UK.
He started his career as an HR executive at DHL UK and briefly as a Resource Planner before moving back to Nigeria.

He has a first degree in Economics and Law From KNUST, Ghana and a Masters from Glasgow University in International Business and Entrepreneurship. Igechi is passionate about project management, business development and talent management.

Why PMP, and not any other certification?

igechi-worlu-pmpOver the past few years my role was becoming more strategic and front-line. I was getting more involved in strategic decisions and most importantly I was taking a major lead in client acquisition and project delivery.

It would be of great value-add to get a certification that would boast my competence and enable me align better, I thought before looking for a suitable project management certification.

I already had Prince2 Foundation certification, so literally tinkered between Prince2 Practitioner and PMP and ended up with the latter. I also did some research online and concluded that the content of PMP aligned more to my pursuit, especially in Nigeria.

Now that you are PMP certified, how does it impact your work?

The process of PMP certification has really broadened my horizon. As a manager business development at Projects, I will be running projects along the PMP lines though I will be adapting and tailoring to suit project’s needs and that of my organization.

I am also drawing up a training manual for my business. The aim is to bring the entire company up to speed in line with PMP project delivery tools and techniques. It would make so much sense for us all to speak same language when it comes to project management.

More so, I intend to keep learning and acquiring more certification as my experience grows. I am already considering Agile.
Having a grasp on delivering projects in both plan and change driven environments will definitely make me a better strategic project manager.

Which study resources you used?

PMBOK and Rita (ad) were my primary resources.

I also used other shorter summaries of the PMBOK especially those sent by Shiv’s PMP Study Blueprint email course (now replaced by PMP Launchpad video course).

1. What made you to take up PMP? Did you consider any other certification exams?

lijin thomas pmpThe desire to gain PMP certification was ignited by my previous Line Manager at Amazon, who took the effort to motivate and encourage me to pursue this course.

I was undecided between PMP or CSMP (Certified Security Management Professional) certifications, initially. Upon doing a thorough evaluation on the adequacy of both certifications, I looked at the prevalence and application of the concepts of both certifications to wide range of industries and domains.

Based on this I decided to give first preference for PMP.

How do you see this certification helping you going forward?

I was confident that getting a good grasp on the concepts, knowledge areas and related ITTOs would definitely equip me to manage medium to complex projects with a high degree of success.

With the certification as well as knowledge I’ve gained now I’m seeking a role that complements my skills and expertise within a matrix organization where project management function is given due importance.

The PMP certification has given me the extra firepower and resilience to position myself as an project management specialist/expert within my domain of expertise. It would also enable me to exert a significant level of influence on the senior management during critical project related decision making process.

PMP Last Mile is crucial for the exam preparation‘The Last Mile Is Crucial, Plan For It Right ‘, says Beverly Wong who passed her PMP exam recently. She has over 10 years of project management experience in managing cross functional projects in the health care and software technology industry.

What Beverly loves most about managing projects is that she gets to learn something new everyday. She finds it rewarding to see the impact of hard work from the entire project team contributing to business goals and delivering value for the organization.

In this post she shares everything she did as part of her exam preparation, because she says that going through other successful PMPs’ experience helped her tremendously.

1. First up, why PMP?

Beverly Wong PMPGetting a PMP certification has been a professional goal of mine. Taking this exam has been a fulfilling and confidence-boosting experience for me.

Now that I have attained my PMP, I am interested in pursuing other certifications such as Lean Six Sigma, Data Analytics, Agile.

2. What was the core benefit you expected from PMP certification?

My expectation is that PMP would help increase my marketability as a Project Manager as well as open doors for advancement of career opportunities.

I have no doubt that I will realize the benefits of having a PMP as it is a global industry-recognized certification for project managers. Also with the PMP knowledge that I have gained while preparing for the exam, I can immediately use the learning in managing my day to day project work.

4. Which study resources did you use?

I used a selective set of resources, mostly based on what worked and what did not.

During this process I realized something – more than just learning the content, what is more important from exam perspective is what you do as part of ‘last mile’ of prep – the part where it all comes together and prepares you to tackle those 4 hours on the exam to answer 200 questions with confidence.

You need to prepare for that. Right from the beginning.

PMP study plan template by Ashvini‘I used a PMP study plan template that is simple and effective’, said Ashvini Chhabra when we spoke recently. Ashvini is a seasoned professional with over 14 years of rich experience in IT Infrastructure Technology, Project Delivery & Service Management. Having been Prince2 certified he wanted to polish his project management knowledge with PMP certification.

In this post he bares the approach, tools and techniques, and strategies he used to pass the PMP certification exam.

What made you to take up PMP?

ashvini-chhabra-pmpI aspired to become PMP certified since long.. almost 7 to 8 years ago. Due to the crazy working hours and long official tours I was not able to pursue. But I kept the strong inclination towards achieving the PMP credential alive.

This year I decided to put my head down work towards the certifications. First I got Prince-2 certified, and then took up PMP.

Truth be told, PMP has its own charm as it tests not only your conceptual knowledge but how you can apply that knowledge to a given project management situation and act.

I find it similar to a T-20 Cricket match – where within 20 overs you need to score at an average of 8 to 9 runs per over. What I mean by this is that PMP exam is not just a test of your knowledge but also the application of it in a short period of time with many unknowns.

Now that you are PMP certified, what are your expectation?

The benefit which I expect from PMP certification is better consideration for the new job opportunities. I am confident of getting opportunities as I am now geared up for higher challenges.
