PMP planning for above target score lakeevia“With proper planning you can even exceed PMP goal”, says LaKeevia after crushing her PMP exam.

Juggling work and family with an infant and older child, LaKeevia planned here PMP so immaculately that she was able to complete her study a month ahead of schedule.

The same held true for her exam as well. She was able to manage time well and complete a whole hour ahead of time.

And guess her result – a perfect Above Target in all 3 domains.

LaKeevia is from Virginia, US. She has a BA in psychology and an MA in Education and Human Development with a specialization in Rehab Counseling. When not busy working, LaKeevia spends time with family, friends, and traveling.

What made you take up PMP?

pmp lakeeviaI have been interested in the PMP certification for a while. I did my research on various certifications and this one stood out to me the most, especially since I’ve worked on projects within my career.

I did not consider any other certifications at that time.

Career growth and development were my expectations from obtaining the PMP certification. I also see the PMP certification helping me in both of those areas.

According to you, what’s the most important factor for success?

I think a PMP aspirant should have a positive outlook, determination, and confidence within themselves.

Picking a study schedule based on your work/home life is a must.

Things do happen, but be prepared to continue to press on and stick with it.

Which study resources did you use for your exam preparation?

I used a PMP study guide with a 35-hour PMP course.

Pocket Prep, YouTube sessions/videos, and various online test questions.

I also reviewed the Agile and PMBOK books.

What was your approach and study plan?

First, I gave myself a timeline of when I wanted to take my exam.

I created a plan and accordingly had weekly goals of completing various sections.

Based on this, I forecasted the study duration, and planned the week I would apply for my exam.

I would say that Planning is key. As things happen and my preparation gets derailed, I would update my study plan as needed.

In fact, I ended up taking the exam a month earlier than I planned!

This happened only because,

  1. I studied every single day
  2. I kept reworking on the plan as per my actual progress

Any challenges?

One roadblock I had was dealing with being sick or getting migraines.

During such instances, I would have to skip a night of studying. But I would tell myself I needed to keep going.

This has been a long journey. An interesting thing about this journey was that I also had a young infant and an older child. I had to balance my work, home, and mom life.

The week before the exam is crucial. How did you prepare during this week?

The week before the exam, I took some mock tests.

I used a stimulator to take prep questions and reviewed my notes.

How was your exam experience?

My exam was at a test center.

I felt that it was important to take my breaks to stretch my legs, walk around, and get some water.

I would also take that time to tell myself I am doing well, and I will pass this exam.

As far as time management is concerned, I did watch the exam timer every now and then. I didn’t want to run out of time.

Though a few questions stumped me and I had to spend more time than I’d anticipated, I was able to complete the exam with 1 hour left on the clock.

I scored –

  • People – Above Target
  • Process – Above Target
  • Business Environment – Above Target

Any study tips?

  • Study hard, there is no alternative when it comes to preparing for PMP exam.
  • Have a study schedule, only this will keep you on track towards achieving your PMP.
  • Adapt the servant-leader mindset, this mindset is essential to answer many questions on the exam.
  • Stay positive, I cannot stress enough. The demons might trouble you, but tell yourself that you can do this.

Go after your PMP goal with a proper plan. I wish you all the best!
