Update 25-May-20 – A student’s online PMP exam experience

One of my students reported this experience last Friday.

At the end of question #90, the popup asked if he wanted to take the break, and a chance to review 90 questions. When he opted NOT to take the break he could continue for 4 hours BUT he did NOT have access to first 90 questions.

What does this mean?

This means there must be a change to your exam strategy –

If you are using my 4-hr exam strategy from PM Exam Last Mile prep program, use that strategy for first 88 questions ONLY. Once you are confident about these 88 questions, move past 89, and 90 and then choose to take the break if you wish.

Then apply the same strategy again to remaining 110 questions

This should definitely increase your odds of getting more questions right on the online exam!

Update – A student’s online PMP exam experience

Here’s the experience of a PMP aspirant that took the online exam. This is taken from Cornelius Fichtner’s PM Prep Cast discussion forum –

Some points of the online test that may help you:

– My camera and microphone were on all the time, and apparently someone was watching me, because I started reading aloud, he immediately sent me a message and asked me to read it in a low voice.
– It is possible to emphasize or strike through any word of the question. This helps to mark important items and eliminate wrong answers.
– There is a countdown timer on the screen, starting at 240 minutes.
– It is easy to use the whiteboard. It is similar to MS Paint. You can write whatever you want, and delete it.
– There is an easy-to-use calculator.
– To mitigate the risk of running out of internet, I put my PC to automatically connect to the internet on my cell phone in case the internet at home fails. Note from Shiv: connecting to hotspot on cell phone is not allowed.
– As soon as you complete a certain number of questions (I believe there were 90), a window opens where you can review your 90 questions already filled out or take a 10-minute break. When the pause starts, a countdown timer remains on the screen. I left the room and went to use the bathroom and relax a little. I didn’t return to the exam until after 10 minutes. Note from Shiv: It is found that even if you did NOT opt for 10 minute break as you get into second part of the exam you will not have access to first 90 questions.
– There is a chat available all the time that you can write to your monitor, in case of any doubt.

PersonVUE system automatically takes you into a “review mode” after first 90 questions. There it is possible to review unanswered questions or those that have been marked. We are able to click on the question number to review it. Quick easy and simple to use.

After my review session, I just clicked on a button to “exit review mode”. The program asks twice if I really want to leave and informs me that these questions cannot be reviewed in the future (after the break).

So, about my journey to PMP. I graduated from UTA with a degree in political science and a minor in biology. I have always had the kind of job where the boss keeps giving me more and more responsibilities to handle managing multiple improvement projects for any company I have worked for.

What I learned is I LOVE project management because it is so dynamic. I like the challenge of taking a concept and turning it into reality. [continue reading…]

What made you take up PMP?

pmp-pitabas-sahooI have spent 33 years of my service career on various aspects of pre-project and Project management activities in the largest Ship & Submarine building company in India. During this time I used to interact directly with highly experienced & knowledgeable project management executives & many other key stakeholders of diverse fields.

Once during such interactions with some key stakeholders in 2014, I was enlightened about the importance & utility of PMP Certification.

Subsequently, after doing some research of my own I was convinced that PMP certification is globally recognized & highly valued in the industry.

Due work pressure and also my retirement being due, it was not possible for me to pursue the certification in the immediate future. Therefore, I planned to acquire this Certification post retirement. Based on my research into other PM certifications I did not consider any other certification exams.

What are some of the benefits you expect from PMP?

Having had project management experience in large, long-duration, high-value, and high-complexity projects all along my service period, I developed a natural passion for this profession. Therefore, the core benefit I expected from PMP Certification was that it would help me to gain recognition globally, supplement my experience & educational background qualitatively, enhance credibility, boost my confidence to take up more challenging assignments and to contribute effectively to the project management community.

Now that I have acquired the PMP Certification post my retirement, I see this helping me henceforth in the following areas during my current retired life:

  • Adding to my ability, credibility & marketability to pursue suitable job opportunities.
  • Progressive updation of knowledge-base on evolving project management profession.
  • Being part of larger PM Community globally and networking.
  • Learning, Contributing & Knowledge-sharing in various platforms.

So, let us get cracking!

How I passed PMP on first try and in 4 action packed weeks!I had just begun my work with a freshly brewed hot cup of coffee. As I logged into my mailbox there was a message from Niraj. He’d passed PMP on first try, that too in 4 weeks.

I let out another involuntary ‘Woohoo..’ sitting at my desk, striking my power pose. My wife in the kitchen didn’t bother much as it has been a regular feature for her – such Woohoos coming out of my home office. Niraj was yet another of my PM Exam Last Mile prep program students to have passed PMP exam in the week.

It felt so incredible. 4 weeks of dedicated preparation with 2-3 hours per day of concentrated study to pass PMP exam is an amazing feat.

Niraj Verma PMPNiraj works as Program Director for a multi-national corporation and based out of Los Angeles, California.

He is a strategic Delivery leader with a strong track record of creating success stories for large clients in their business transformation journey, platform modernizations, cloud migrations, mergers and acquisitions and efficiency turnarounds for Animal health, Healthcare, Retail and Automotive clients.

Even with over 20 years of IT experience, Niraj said, he always felt a void he needed to fill. To understand and implement the best practices which came with the PMP certification.

Over next few days I chased him for a quick interview to have him share his entire PMP experience. Niraj’s preparation and insights would be all the more important for any PMP aspirant because he passed his PMP exam with 4 short rock-solid prep weeks.

Let’s get started.

What made you take up PMP?

The breadth and depth of knowledge which came with the PMP certification and the knowledge of best practices was something which I always wanted to possess being in the knowledge industry for more than 20 years.

To top it, I have always been awed by the aura that seems to surround the PMP professionals and the level of respect and regard they command in the respective industries they work – which made me finally go for it.

What was the core benefit you expected from PMP certification?

Knowledge of end to end project management processes with all the process groups (PG) and knowledge areas (KA) and how they impact each other. Honestly not all project managers get hands-on experience with all 9 Knowledge Areas (leaving the all-encompassing Integration management, of course). Thus it becomes critical to prepare for any challenge a project might throw at you any time, and PMP is a great way to get this knowledge.

One key change I am observing in me now is the systematic way of approaching an issue and to consider its impact on project constraints – scope, schedule, cost, quality, risk & resources. It has made the thinking model more rational and disciplined.
